About Ignacio Alvarez

Ignacio Alvarez is Professor of Human-Centered Intelligent Systems at Ingolstadt University of Applied Sciences (THI). His research explores the intersection of artificial intelligence, automotive engineering, and human–computer interaction. In 2025, he was awarded a Top-Professorship under Bavaria’s High-Tech Agenda, recognizing his leadership in shaping the future of intelligent mobility.

Before joining THI, Prof. Alvarez spent more than a decade at Intel Labs as Principal Engineer in Automated Driving, where he led projects in AI safety, vehicle communications, and user experience. His work contributed to Intel Automotive and Mobileye products and to open-source simulation platforms such as GENIVI and CARLA. Earlier in his career, he was Systems Architect leading BMW’s Connected Drive program, developing next-generation telematics, speech technologies, and smartphone integration.

He holds over 160 patents, has published more than 50 research articles, and has played an active role in international standardization efforts on vehicle-to-everything (V2X) systems and automated vehicle safety. Beyond his research, Prof. Alvarez is active in the scientific community as chair-elect of ACM’s AutoUI Steering Committee and as a Senior Member of IEEE, ITSS, and SAE.
